Class Late/Make-up Work, Emergency & Attendance Policies:
Late Work - Late work WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! Unless the student has an excused EMERGENCY absence and the work could NOT be submitted electronically due to this EXCUSED absence. Due Dates ARE NOT Negotiable (they will STAND)! An EMERGENCY absence in this instance is defined as: absence due to death in the immediate family, an illness that causes you to be ADMITTED to the HOSPITAL for at least ONE whole day or a SERIOUS ILLNESS that causes the student to be COMPLETELY confined to his/her bed. The STUDENT MUST SUBMIT a note to Mrs. Pendleton detailing the circumstances of the emergency, signed by a parent or doctor.
Make-up Work – When a student has an excused absence from class, it is the student’s responsibility to find out about missed classwork or notes and turn the assignments in following school policies. Since we are moving towards a paperless classroom, due dates for outside of class work will STAND (only in very serious emergency situations will an extension be considered, see above). If a student is absent, s/he must copy the daily notes from a classmate to find out what was done in class while s/he was absent. If a worksheet was passed out, the student will need to see Mrs. Pendleton at the end of class to obtain the worksheet. If a test or quiz was taken, the student will need to plan on staying after school on the first Thursday following the absence to take a make-up test/quiz. Any make-up assignments are to be CLEARLY LABELED with the student’s first & LAST name, class period, reason for absence and title of the assignment.
It is the STUDENT's RESPONSIBILITY to turn in the excuse note to Mrs. Townsend (the attendance clerk) within 5 (FIVE) days of the absence. If the student DOES NOT turn in the note to Mrs. Townsend so she can adjust the OFFICIAL ATTENDANCE, the late work will be given a ZERO!
In cases where late or make-up work is allowed, the JCPS policy for extending the due dates of this work will be followed. The student will be allowed the number of class days absent PLUS ONE additional class day. If the student missed 3 school days, 2 A-days and 1 B-day, you will be allowed either a total of 3 A-days (# of class days absent PLUS ONE) or a total of 2 B-days (# of class days PLUS ONE). If a student misses the new deadline, s/he will receive a grade of ZERO for the assignment, there will be NO OTHER OPPORTUNITIES to make-up that grade. Class time is for Learning; therefore: Students may not leave class during the period – Emergencies will arise during the year and for this reason each student will be allowed to leave the room, one at a time, for no more than 10 minutes per emergency.
Students will be given 3 special tickets per semester, they MUST HAVE a TICKET, their own agenda and their School ID to leave the classroom, or a referral will be written for failure to follow the ID/Agenda policy established in the Offical JCPS Code of Conduct guidelines.
If a student has a medically necessary reason for frequent bathroom breaks, a note from the doctor will excuse the time out of class for the duration of the medical necessity, please send a note from the doctor for me to copy and keep on file.
Tardy Policy –Students MUST be IN THEIR ASSIGNED SEAT, with their class materials ON THEIR DESK, ready to BEGIN CLASS, when the BELL RINGS! Walking through the door, being in the hall, walking around the room (whether or not you have been in your desk previously) when the bell is ringing is considered TARDY, NO EXCEPTIONS! Do not ask if you are tardy or not, if you are NOT in YOUR DESK with MATERIALS READY when the bell RINGS, YOU ARE TARDY! YOU WILL have a referral for EVERY TARDY after the 3rd tardy.
A student maybe tardy to class up to three times for the year, without a written referral, if the tardy is less than ten (10) minutes. However, assignments collected before the student arrives to class will be treated as late assignments and will not be accepted.
Each tardy over the third andall students not in class for more than ten minutes will have a referral written and sent to the office. If students need additional time for EMERGENCIES, the student should come immediately to class, ask permission, and get his /her hall passed signed, a ticket will also be collected upon return from the emergency. These students will have an additional three (3) to five (5) minute break, and may submit homework if done upon return to class. (Mrs. Pendleton reserves the right to refuse students who abuse this privilege.)
Unexcused Absences – Unexcused absences will result in the student loosing class participation points, class participation points CAN NOT BE MADE-UP. Unexcused absences include: absences from school when excused absence note has not been accepted, or turned into, the attendance office; cuts, ISAP, tardies, etcetera. Unexcused absences also include any absence from class to participate in a school activity that the student has not asked Mrs. Pendleton’s permission to be a participant – i.e. fieldtrips, assemblies, shadowing, completing assignments for another teacher, and other such activities.
ISAP/STOP/Suspension – may be changed to excused absences if a student gets an ISAP, STOP, or Suspension assignment from Mrs. Pendleton, completes the assignment while out of class, and places the assignment in the make-up box upon return. Generally, the assignment will be to copy the lesson vocabulary three (3) times for each day absent from class.
